Bears and Sooners square off in Big 12 tussle

02/27/2010 - Norman, OK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jockeying for position behind conference powerhouse Kansas, the 24th-ranked Baylor Bears invade Norman this weekend for a Big 12 showdown with the Oklahoma Sooners.

The Bears have won four of their last five games, including a 70-66 home win against Texas A&M this week, pushing the team's league record to 8-5. Baylor is currently in a tie with Texas and Texas A&M for fourth place in the conference.

Oklahoma is much farther down the conference ladder at a mere 4-9. The team is mired in a current five-game losing streak, including getting handled in Lawrence this week by the top-ranked Jayhawks, 81-68.

Oklahoma has dominated this series, holding a 35-6 all-time advantage. The Sooners have won 30 of the last 31 meetings and has captured victories in 14 straight in Norman. However, it is the Bears seeking a regular-season sweep after routing in the Sooners back on January 9th, 91-60.

Baylor will be a dangerous team in the postseason thanks to consistency at the offensive end of the floor. The team is netting a respectable 76.9 ppg and doing so on just over 48 percent shooting and just under 40 percent accuracy from behind the arc. In addition, Baylor holds a huge edge in rebounding, ranking fifth nationally at +7.9. Guard LaceDarius Dunn is the top offensive threat, averaging a robust 19.1 ppg (second in the conference). Fellow guard Tweety Carter is a perfect complement with his stellar backcourt play, showing the ability to score (16.0 ppg) and distribute (conference-best 6.1 apg) with the finest point guards in the nation. The pair have combined for 153 of the team's 202 three-pointers to date. Ekpe Udoh is the team's resident muscle inside, averaging a double-double with 13.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per outing. The Bears held off a feisty Texas A&M squad to earn their eighth league win of the season this week. Dunn was once again masterful, as he finished with 23 points and eight rebounds. Josh Lomers chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds to the cause, while Udoh and Quincy Acy tallied nine points apiece.

The Sooners have five players currently averaging double figures, but that has not translated into gaudy offensive numbers. On the contrary, Oklahoma is averaging a rather pedestrian 73.1 ppg, doing so on just .433 shooting. Willie Warren is the top scorer, but has been coming off the bench of late, despite netting 16.3 ppg. Freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin adds 14.1 ppg, and doubles the team's primary distributor (4.7 apg). Veteran Tony Crocker is next in line at 11.5 ppg, followed by Cade Davis and Tiny Gallon at 10.1 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. Oklahoma was outgunned in Lawrence this week from the opening tap and although the Sooners made a game of it late, they just couldn't close the gap and pull off an upset of Kansas. The loss spoiled a solid performance by Mason-Griffin, who finished with 17 points and eight assists. Andrew Fitzgerald added 16 points, while Davis chipped in with 13. The Sooners were once again at a disadvantage without Warren, who has missed five of the last nine games (ankle, illness). The team shot a miserable 30.3 percent from the floor in the first half, but made a respectable run in the second stanza, hitting on 53.3 percent of its shots.
